UCLA faculty expert advisory: Russsian oligarch Khodorkovsky freed
By UCLA Newsroom December 20, 2013 Category: Academics & Faculty
In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pardoned Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an oil tycoon and formerly Russia's richest man. Khordokovsky was freed Dec. 20 after spending 10 years in prison; his imprisonment was seen by many as retribution by Putin for Khodorkovsky's support of opposition parties and his own political ambitions. UCLA has an expert.
Daniel Treisman, professor of political science, is an expert on Russian politics, Vladimir Putin, democratic transitions and political corruption. The author of "The Return: Russia's Journey From Gorbachev to Medvedev" and "After the Deluge: Regional Crises and Political Consolidation in Russia," he teaches courses on the political and economic systems of Russia and Eastern Europe and the political economy of reform.
