Film School's Unique Approach Earns Praise
Thursday’s Variety named Teri Schwartz, dean of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, "Media Mentor of the Year" and highlighted her efforts to revamp the school’s curriculum, initiatives and programs to prepare students for the interdisciplinary 21st-century entertainment industry. Additional Variety articles spotlighted the partnerships Schwartz has forged with the entertainment industry and with the Telluride Film Festival. Schwartz and Deborah Nadoolman Landis, director of the Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design at the School of Theater, Film and Television, were quoted in the coverage.
Future of Drone Aircraft in the U.S.
Today’s Washington Post features an op-ed co-authored by John Villasenor, professor of electrical engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, about the Federal Aviation Administration's licensing and regulation of drone aircraft in the U.S. and the potential privacy concerns drones raise.
The Curse of Oil-Rich Countries
Michael Ross, professor of political science and director of UCLA's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, was interviewed Thursday on KPCC-89.3 FM's “AirTalk” about his research and recent book, "The Oil Curse: How Petroleum Wealth Shapes the Development of Nations," which examines the ways in which oil riches can make nations more prone to dictatorships, insurgencies, and economic and gender disparities.
NASA Extends Mission Exploring Protoplanet
United Press International reported Thursday that NASA is extending its Dawn mission, which is orbiting and studying Vesta, a protoplanet some 143 million miles from Earth. UCLA is in charge of the mission's science. Christopher Russell, UCLA professor of geophysics and space physics and the Dawn mission’s principal investigator, was quoted.
Spending State's Cap-and-Trade Revenues
An article in today’s California Progress Report about California's use of future fees from the state's cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gas emissions cites research on the subject by M. Rhead Enion, the Emmett/Frankel Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at the UCLA School of Law.
