Nearly 4 Million Californians Face Hunger
A study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research showing that an estimated 3.8 million California adults could not provide adequate food for themselves or their families during the recent recession was highlighted Tuesday by California's Union Democrat, the OC Weekly and NPR. Gail Harrison, professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, was quoted in the coverage.
Home Sweet Chaos
A new book by researchers at the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families (CELF) examining in intimate detail the home lives of 32 middle-class, dual-earner families with children in Los Angeles was highlighted Tuesday by the Boston Globe and American Public Media's "Marketplace." Jeanne Arnold, UCLA professor of anthropology and a CELF researcher, was quoted in the Globe.
Copper Surfaces and Hospital-Acquired Infections
KPCC-89.3 FM and News Medical reported Tuesday that UCLA has received a federal grant for an interdisciplinary study aimed at determining if the use of copper surfaces in hospital settings will lead to a decrease in hospital-acquired infections. The study will include researchers from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the UCLA Sustainable Technology and Policy Program.

An article in Monday’s Modesto Bee about a recent dip in the diabetes rate in Stanislaus County schools highlighted a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research that tracked California childhood obesity rates on a county-by-county basis.

PhysOrg and Indian Express report today on research by Thomas Trail, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar in psychology, and Benjamin Karney, professor of psychology and co-director of the Relationship Institute at UCLA, that found that low-income and high-income Americans have similar views and expectations of marriage. The development by researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of a high-throughput optical microscope that can identify rare "rogue" cancer cells in a blood sample with a sensitivity of one part per million was highlighted Monday by Socal Tech and Verge and Tuesday by Popular Photography and Gizmodo. Bahram Jalali, the Northrop Grumman Endowed Opto-Electronic Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA Engineering and a member of UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute, was quoted in the coverage.
New Discovery May Help Muscle Disorders
News Medical reported Monday on research by UCLA assistant professor of neurology Carmen Bertoni that identified a compound that could help counteract the mutations that cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other genetic muscle disorders. Bertoni was quoted.
Stroke Victims Get Better Care When EMTs Call Ahead
United Press International, Medicine Plus and MedPage Today reported Tuesday on a study led by Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, showing that while stroke patients often get better and faster treatment when paramedics call ahead to notify a hospital they are en route, this only occurs about one-third of the time. Fonarow was quoted.
Legal Action for Rate Manipulation
A blog article in Tuesday's New York Times about lawsuits against bankers who allegedly manipulated the London interbank offered rate (Libor) cited a 2010 study by UCLA indicating that Libor was much lower than it should have been throughout 2008 as a result of events linked to the Lehman Bros. bankruptcy.
Scientists Claim Discovery of 'God' Particle
An article in Tuesday’s Chicago Tribune about the discovery by researchers working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) laboratory in Switzerland of what may be the elusive the Higgs boson particle highlighted the work of UCLA professor of physics Robert Cousins, a member of one of the teams working at CERN to find the particle.
