A new book by researchers at the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families (CELF) examining in intimate detail the home lives of 32 middle-class, dual-earner families with children in Los Angeles was highlighted Tuesday by the Boston Globe and American Public Media's "Marketplace." KPCC-89.3 FM and News Medical reported Tuesday that UCLA has received a federal grant for an interdisciplinary study aimed at determining if the use of copper surfaces in hospital settings will lead to a decrease in hospital-acquired infections. The study will include researchers from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the UCLA Sustainable Technology and Policy Program.

An article in Monday’s Modesto Bee about a recent dip in the diabetes rate in Stanislaus County schools highlighted a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research that tracked California childhood obesity rates on a county-by-county basis.

News Medical reported Monday on research by UCLA assistant professor of neurology Carmen Bertoni that identified a compound that could help counteract the mutations that cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other genetic muscle disorders. Bertoni was quoted.

United Press International, Medicine Plus and MedPage Today reported Tuesday on a study led by Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, showing that while stroke patients often get better and faster treatment when paramedics call ahead to notify a hospital they are en route, this only occurs about one-third of the time. Fonarow was quoted.

A blog article in Tuesday's New York Times about lawsuits against bankers who allegedly manipulated the London interbank offered rate (Libor) cited a 2010 study by UCLA indicating that Libor was much lower than it should have been throughout 2008 as a result of events linked to the Lehman Bros. bankruptcy.

 

An article in Tuesday’s Chicago Tribune about the discovery by researchers working at the  European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) laboratory in Switzerland of what may be the elusive the Higgs boson particle highlighted the work of UCLA professor of physics Robert Cousins, a member of one of the teams working at CERN to find the particle. Cousins was quoted.
