UCLA Bulks up on Vegan Options
The Opposing Views blog reported Wednesday on UCLA’s meatless and vegan dining options and cited UCLA's ranking as the most vegan-friendly campus in the U.S. by the youth organization of People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals. Daniel Blumstein, professor and chair of the UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a researcher with the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, was quoted.
 
Marriage and Socioeconomic Divisions
Asian News International reported Wednesday on research by Thomas Trail, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar in psychology, and Benjamin Karney, professor of psychology and co-director of the Relationship Institute at UCLA, showing that low-income and high-income Americans have similar views and expectations of marriage. Trail and Karney were quoted.
 
Even Monkeys Have an Old Boy's Network
Asian News International and United Press International reported Wednesday on research led by UCLA professor of anthropology Susan Perry showing that the sons of group-leading alpha-male capuchin monkeys are more likely to become leaders themselves. Perry was quoted in the coverage.
 
Legal Action for Rate Manipulation
An article in Wednesday's CNN Money about lawsuits against bankers who allegedly manipulated the London inter-bank offered rate (Libor) cited a 2010 study by UCLA indicating that Libor was much lower than it should have been throughout 2008 as a result of events linked to the Lehman Bros. bankruptcy. Connan Snider, UCLA assistant professor of economics, was quoted.

Patients Unlikely to Disagree With Doctors
Reuters reports today on a study led by Dominick Frosch, associate adjunct professor of general internal medicine and health services research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, showing that while most patients want to make major medical decisions in conjunction with their doctor, only one in seven would speak up if they disagreed with a treatment plan. Frosch is quoted.
 
UCLA Showcases Classic Westerns
A Los Angeles Times blog reports today on “Ride Lonesome: The Films of Budd Boetticher," a new film series by the UCLA Film and Television Archive that begins Friday at the Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater.
