Course Explores Art of Storytelling
The Los Angeles Times reports today on an innovative UCLA course that promotes storytelling as a tool for personal development. The class is taught by Peter Guber, visiting professor in the department of film, television and visual media at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, and Robert Rosen, the school’s dean. Guber is quoted.
 
Man-Made Enzymes Hold Vast Potential
The Australianscience magazine Cosmos reported Thursday on the creation by UCLA professor of chemistry and biochemistry Kendall Houk and colleagues of “designer enzymes” that have the potential to help produce more effective medications and to deactivate pathogenic agents used in biological warfare. Houk was quoted.
 
Intellectual Property and Piracy
Kal Raustiala, professor of law and director of the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations, was interviewed Monday on the Internet channel BigThink.com about the complex relationship among intellectual property rights, piracy and creativity.
 
Prof’s Work Sheds Light on UCLA History
Diverse Issues in Higher Education reports today on the efforts of David Hayes-Bautista, professor of general internal medicine and health services research and director of the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, to gain recognition for a Latino member of the California Legislature who in the 1880s played an important role in founding the state teachers college that later became UCLA's first campus. Hayes-Bautista is quoted.
 
Historic UCLA Student Film Released in U.K.
The Telegraph (U.K.) reports today on the release in England of filmmaker Charles Burnett’s acclaimed "Killer of Sheep," made when he was a UCLA student in the 1970s. The film was recently restored by Ross Lipman, a preservationist with the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
 
Anderson Forecast Cautiously Affirms No Recession
The UCLA Anderson Forecast’s recently released quarterly report, which affirms that the U.S. economy is weak but not in a recession, was featured today in a Stockton Record editorial and Thursday in an Orange County Register column. Forecast economist Jerry Nickelsburg was cited in the coverage.
