Program Takes Undergrads on Archaeology Digs
The Spanish-language news service EFE reported Monday on the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology’s summer field program, during which undergraduates participate in international archaeological digs and blog about their experiences. Ran Boytner, director of international research at the Cotsen Institute, and Thomas Wake, director of the institute's zooarchaeology laboratory, were quoted. The article also appeared on the Yahoo, Telemundo and MSN Latino websites.
Reversing Mental Retardation
A study by Dr. Alcino Silva, professor of neurobiology and a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute, and Dan Ehninger, a UCLA postgraduate researcher in neurobiology, that found that learning disorders resulting from a genetic mutation that causes autism can be reversed in mice using an FDA-approved drug was featured today by United Press International, Tuesday by the Telegraph (U.K.) and Monday by the Los Angeles Daily News. City News Service,Asian News International, the Indo-Asian News Service, and the website of KTLA-Channel 5 reported the story over the weekend. Silva and Ehninger were quoted in the coverage.
Progress in Treatment of Brain Cancer
A UCLA brain cancer vaccine program led by Dr. Linda Liau, professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center, was featured Monday on KTLA-Channel 5’s “Prime News.” Liau and a program participant were interviewed.
