The Internet Is Turning 40
Agence France-Presse and KNBC-Channel 4 reported Sunday, and the Montreal Gazette reports today, on the upcoming 40th anniversary of the birth of the Internet at UCLA, highlighting the pivotal role played by Leonard Kleinrock, UCLA distinguished professor of computer science, and his colleagues, who sent the first host-to-host message over the network on Oct. 29, 1969. Saturday’s Los Angeles Times featured a Q&A with Kleinrock.
Students and Mental Health Issues
A Sunday Los Angeles Times article on the ways in which colleges and universities handle student mental health issues highlighted the Oct. 8 incident at UCLA in which a student allegedly stabbed a classmate during a chemistry teaching lab. Stephen Frank, UCLA associate professor of history, and Elizabeth Gong-Guy, director of UCLA’s Student Psychological Services, were quoted.
NASCAR Driver Accused of Drug-Taking
Anthony Butch, director of the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, was featured Saturday in an ESPN “Outside the Lines” broadcast segment about NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield, who has disputed his positive drug test for methamphetamine. Butch was also referenced Sunday in a Stock Car Spin article about Mayfield and was quoted Friday in Yahoo! Sports and FOX Bleacher Report articles.
Coping With a Cancer Diagnosis
Anne Coscarelli, director of the Simms-Mann/UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, was featured Thursday in a KCET “SoCal Connected” segment about the tools people use to cope with a diagnosis of cancer, including humor.
Prof Is Sitcom’s Go-To Expert
An article in Saturday’s Oregonian about the television sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" highlighted UCLA physics and astronomy professor David Saltzberg's role as a scientific consultant for the show, which revolves around two physicists who lack social skills. Saltzberg was quoted.
Fowler Features Basketry Arts
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday on "Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art" and two other new exhibitions at the Fowler Museum at UCLA that explore various aspects of African American and African basketry arts and their historic connections.
