Bruins Weigh in on Debate
KTLA-Channel 5 reported Wednesday on an Obama–Romney debate "viewing party" with students and faculty at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs. Franklin D. Gilliam Jr., dean of the Luskin School and a professor of political science and public policy, was interviewed. Gilliam also commented on the debate today on KTLA.
 
New Treatment for 'Bubble Boy' Disease
KCAL-Channel 9 reported Thursday on a study led by Dr. Donald Kohn, director of UCLA's Human Gene Medicine Program and a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, demonstrating that a combination of chemotherapy and gene therapy may help doctors treat children with "bubble boy" disease, in which the body cannot successfully fight off germs. Kohn was interviewed.
 
New Antibiotic Cures by Disarming Pathogens
Science Blog reported Tuesday, and Gizmodo reported Wednesday, on research led by Dr. Brad Spellberg, assistant professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, that found that a new type of antibiotic can effectively treat an antibiotic-resistant infection by disarming instead of killing the bacteria that cause it. Spellberg was quoted in the coverage.
 
UCLA One of World's Best Universities
KCAL-Channel 9 and KTTV-Channel 11 reported Wednesday on the annual London Times Higher Education university rankings, in which UCLA placed 13th among the world's top 400 institutions.

No Ignoring Climate Change
Today’s Los Angeles Times features an op-ed by Glen MacDonald, director of UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and a professor of geography and of ecology and evolutionary biology, asserting that hard data is making it increasingly difficult for climate-change deniers to ignore the global phenomenon.

Second-Generation Biofuels
A Forests News blog article published today about renewable energy cited research by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability analyzing the energy return on crops like soy that are used for biofuels.

Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow
Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, was quoted Tuesday in aLos Angeles Times article about beta-blocker drugs and heart disease. He is quoted today in a HealthDay News article about new research that could benefit patients with cardiovascular disease.
