Wednesday’s Los Angeles Daily News featured a column by Dr. Claire Panosian Dunavan, clinical professor of infectious diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, about tonsillectomies and post-operative recovery. Dr. Paul Kedeshian, UCLA associate clinical professor of head and neck surgery, was quoted.
Upgrading the Internet for the Future
Scientific American reported Tuesday on a National Science Foundation–funded research project led by Lixia Zhang, professor of computer science at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, that aims to improve the way data is distributed on the Internet by developing new architecture.

A Discovery News article published Wednesday about gang intervention programs cited an ongoing study by Jorja Leap, adjunct associate professor of social welfare at the UCLA School of Public Affairs, on the Homeboys Industries program in Los Angeles, which offers gang members counseling, rehabilitation, tattoo removal and jobs. Leap was quoted.

Stuart Gabriel, professor of finance at the UCLA Anderson School of Management and director of the Ziman Center for Real Estate at UCLA, was interviewed Wednesday on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" about a new federal program that will help local governments and nonprofits buy distressed properties in order to improve neighborhoods.

The Marysville Appeal-Democrat reports today, and the Modesto Bee and Sacramento's CBS-Channel 13 reported Wednesday, on a UCLA Center for Health Policy Research study led by Dr. Allison Diamant, UCLA assistant adjunct professor of general internal medicine and health services research, that found that a majority of adults in California are obese or overweight and that more than 2 million have been diagnosed with diabetes. Susan Babey, a project director with the center, was quoted in the Appeal-Democrat and the Modesto Bee.
Using Math to Help Fight Crime
A New York Times blog reported Wednesday on UCLA research in which scientists applied sophisticated mathematics to urban crime patterns to determine which types of crime "hotspots" in Los Angeles are most likely to be affected by intensified police actions.
