UCLA Luskin Lecture Series launches Feb. 16 with legal scholar Charles Ogletree
Harvard prof to discuss controversial conviction, execution of Troy Davis

WHAT:
Prominent Harvard University legal scholar Charles Ogletree will deliver the first lecture in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs' new Luskin Lecture Series, which is designed to enhance public discourse on topics relevant to today's societal needs. The series features renowned thought leaders and brings together scholars with national and local leaders who are involved in issues that are changing the way our country addresses its most pressing problems.
Ogletree will discuss the case of Troy Davis — whose controversial murder conviction in Georgia resulted in his execution on Sept. 21, 2011 — and will assess whether the case can serve as a catalyst for a new movement focusing on our criminal justice system. Much of the focus will be on California, with its prison overcrowding, and on challenges to capital punishment.
The event is co-sponsored by UCLA School of Law's David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.

Charles Ogletree
Ogletree is the Jesse Climenko Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and director of the school's Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice. He has earned an international reputation for his research on complex issues of law and for working to secure the the equal rights for all guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution. Ogletree has a long record of commitment and service to public schools and higher education. He has received numerous awards and honors and was named one of the 100-plus most influential African Americans by Ebony Magazine.
Ogletree has written and co-edited numerous books, among them "The Presumption of Guilt: The Arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr." (June 2010); "When Law Fails: Making Sense of Miscarriages of Justice" (2009); "From Lynch Mobs to the Killing State: Race and the Death Penalty in America" (2006); and "All Deliberate Speed: Reflections on the First Half-Century of Brown v. Board of Education" (2004).
