UCLA Anderson School Professor Appointed to Endowed Chair

The Anderson School at UCLA announces the appointment of Professor Sanford M. Jacoby to the Howard Noble Chair in Management. Jacoby, a professor of human resources and organizational behavior, has been with The Anderson School for more than 20 years and holds joint appointments with the School of Public Policy and the History Department in the College of Letters & Science.

Jacoby is the author of four books and numerous articles on human resources, industrial relations, economic and labor history, and labor markets. His latest book, "Modern Manors: Welfare Capitalism Since the New Deal," has won several awards and was recently translated into Japanese. The book explores the concept that corporations have become the core social welfare institution of our time.

Jacoby's current project is a comparative study of management organization in large Japanese and U.S. firms, for which he received an Abe Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council.

Jacoby is co-editor of the Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal and serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. In addition, he is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, an organization of policy experts in the field of social insurance.

The Howard Noble Chair was established through a gift from Clark and B.J. Cornell and was given in the form of a trust to The Anderson School. Today, the trust funds five endowed chairs of management, all of which are named in honor of previous Anderson deans. Howard Noble served as the School's first dean in 1935.

The tradition of endowing professorial chairs to attract distinguished scholars and recognize academic excellence dates to 16th-century England. The donated funds are invested, and the resulting interest income is used to support the teaching and research activities of the professor selected to hold the chair. Faculty members are chosen by a committee of peers and reviewers for exemplary contributions in their field of expertise.
