The hill where many UCLA students live is alive with the sound of chatter, eight-claps, cheering and laughter. Roughly 11,000 undergraduates have begun moving into residence halls. The bulk of arrivals will move in between today and Sunday, Sept. 22.
Starting with the unloading and loading of belongings from cars, trucks and minivans in Parking Structure 7, the logistics are coordinated. The process is a smooth one that involves appointments, move-in passes and lots and lots of blue and gold laundry carts. In addition, more than 1,000 students, including residence assistants, move-in assistants and student leaders, assist along with Housing staff and a moving company hired to transport people and belongings.
Roughly 850 of the students who are moving in this week will be residing in one of UCLA’s newest residence halls – Sproul Cove and Sproul Landing. With the opening of these residence halls, along with the opening of Holly and Gardenia last year, a full 40 percent of undergraduate students now live on campus.
Once students are settled into their rooms, there is still lots to do. True Bruin Welcome is already underway, with many varied events scheduled from now until Oct. 2 to keep students active, energized and engaged in campus life.
This year, UCLA welcomes approximately 28,000 undergraduate students - including 5,700 freshmen and 2,900 transfer students - and 13,400 graduate students. Classes begin Sept. 26.
