UCLA placed 10th out of 284 national universities on the basis of serving the public interest, according to rankings published Aug. 26 by Washington Monthly magazine.
In determining the rankings, the magazine considers factors such as social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and awarding doctoral degrees) and service (encouraging students to give back to their country).
The survey compares a university’s predicted and actual graduation rates, federal aid for low-income students, the number of faculty receiving significant awards, and the number of students who join the Peace Corps or ROTC or engage in community service.
This is the third consecutive year that UCLA has been among the top 10 universities in the Washington Monthly rankings.
