Military Times has recognized UCLA as one of the best colleges in the nation in serving the needs of students who are military veterans. The publication's fourth annual "Best for Vets: Colleges" rankings were released Nov. 11.
Each year, Military Times, on online newsweekly published by Gannett Government Media, ranks colleges and universities based on a 150-question survey that comprehensively analyzes schools' offerings for veterans.
"As with all of the 'Best for Vets' rankings, 'Best for Vets: Colleges' is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an institution a good fit for military veterans," said Amanda Miller, editor of the Military Times' EDGE magazine.
The annual survey provides servicemen and servicewomen a measure by which to gauge whether a school or degree program will truly benefit them. The rankings factor in schools' service-member enrollment, the percentage of tuition covered by the GI Bill, and the availability of specific programs to help veterans. For this year's survey, a new emphasis was placed on academic rigor.
The extensive evaluation process also incorporates statistics commonly used to track student success and academic quality, including student loan–default rates, retention rates, graduation rates and student–faculty ratios.
UCLA has a long history of serving veterans and active-duty military members, dating back to the end of World War II. Today, the campus offers a wide variety of services and programs that benefit veterans, including the newly launched Ronald A. Katz Center for Collaborative Military Medicine.
