Thousands of students, including an estimated 8,800 new undergraduates, will arrive on campus this week for the start of another academic year at UCLA.
Some 12,000 undergraduate students will move into campus residence halls beginning Thursday, Sept. 17. The fall quarter officially kicks off on Sept. 21, and classes begin Sept 24. UCLA’s total estimated enrollment is 29,000 undergraduate and 13,500 graduate students.

“We are excited to welcome this year’s incoming class of talented scholars to UCLA and thrilled to see our returning students back on campus,” said Janina Montero, vice chancellor for student affairs. “This time of year punctuates the energy and optimism we feel as UCLA Bruins.”
In an effort to foster community on campus, introduce students to UCLA life and welcome returning students, various campus groups and organizations plan a wide range of True Bruin Welcome activities. These run through Oct. 2 and include receptions, open houses, concerts, social gatherings, community service opportunities and more.
Highlights:
• Chancellor Block will formally welcome 5,700 freshmen and 3,100 new transfer students to campus on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Pauley Pavilion beginning at 4 p.m.
• On Sunday, Sept. 20, a discussion of the UCLA Common Book “Bad Feminist,” by Roxane Gay, will be held for commuter students at the Pauley Pavilion Clubhouse at 6 p.m. The following day — Monday, Sept. 21 — Roxane Gay will be at UCLA’s Royce Hall as part of a Common Book discussion from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the entire UCLA community. To obtain tickets, present a Bruincard at the UCLA Central Ticket Office between now and Sept. 21. Tickets will also be available at Royce Hall one hour prior to the start of the event.
• The Bruin Bash concert will be held Monday, Sept. 21 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. Hosted by UCLA’s Campus Events Commission and Cultural Affairs Commission, Bruin Bash also features a pre-concert festival from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Intramural Field.
• On Tuesday, Sept. 22, many of UCLA’s roughly 1,000 registered student groups and intramural sports teams will be sharing information and giving demonstrations as part of the Enormous Activities Fair, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Royce Quad, Schoenberg Quad and Perloff Quad.
• Also on Tuesday, Sept. 22, students can mingle with UCLA coaches, student athletes and mascots at the DENaugural UCLA Athletics Welcome from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. The event features giveaways, contests and surprises.
• UCLA’s seventh annual Volunteer Day will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, beginning at 7 a.m. Participants will fan out across the city to work at nearly 50 locations, including the homes of senior citizens, parks, shelters, schools, community gardens and more.
