Jayne Lewis

15 SECONDSJayne Lewis
Professor of English
Lewis earned her Ph.D. in English from Princeton in 1988. "I'm not sure how I chose my field," she said. "It was either a pure accident or divine intervention or the convergence of contradictory desires - to spend lots of time alone reading, and yet also to share the philosophies and experiences that literature opens to us."

Which living person do you most admire, and why?
My policy is only to admire the dead.

What is the best thing about working at UCLA?
There are so many, many wonderful things about UCLA, but none of them would have any meaning whatsoever without the students, who are so warm and bright and open.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Most recently, a new guitar.

What words or phrases do you most overuse?
"Amazing," "fantastic" - all those enthusiastic superlatives.
