"Naming things, and putting them in order, are simple enough tasks — but different people carry them out with different results, and that's what causes problems for those of us striving to improve the effectiveness of document-retrieval systems. Information scientists build bridges between fields as varied as librarianship, computer science, linguistics, psychology and philosophy. It's this eclecticism and vibrancy that I love — and what better place to cultivate one's appreciation of those qualities than UCLA?"
