Children’s author-illustrator K.G. Campbell spoke to an eager audience of primary students from UCLA Lab School on March 6 in the Rotunda of Powell Library. The young visitors learned about the creative process of the award-winning author and illustrator of “Lester’s Dreadful Sweaters” and “The Mermaid and the Shoe.” The event was presented by UCLA Writing Programs.

Bruce Beiderwell, director of UCLA Writing Programs, said that Campbell seemed to be “the perfect person to help bring together parts of UCLA’s world that can collaborate more closely on shared concerns.”

UCLA Writing Programs engages with numerous units on campus, including Athletics, Residential Life, and the Academic Advancement Program. Beiderwell said that the program also has provided consulting services for other units at UCLA, and trains Teaching Assistants for a variety of undergraduate courses.

“Because writing is central to so much of thinking, learning, and succeeding in the academic world and beyond, UCLA Writing Programs has formed many connections,” said Beiderwell. “The event served partly to signal the Writing Programs’ breadth of interests, and it also gave us a way to both recognize an important longstanding partnership with Powell Library as well as develop a new one with UCLA Lab School.”
