Coming soon to UCLA: women’s sand volleyball

iStock 000007329631XSmallStarting this spring, UCLA will add sand volleyball as a women’s intercollegiate sport, bringing the total number of intercollegiate athletic teams to 25 — 15 for women and 10 for men.
The team will be coached by UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer and former men’s volleyball star Stein Metzger, who will work closely with Mike Sealy, head coach of the women’s indoor volleyball squad. UCLA’s inaugural sand volleyball team will consist of players from the women’s fall indoor team.
Sand volleyball was approved as an NCAA Emerging Sport for women in 2009, with the first year of competition beginning in 2011-12. UCLA will join 20 other schools nationwide who have added the sport since that time. As more schools continue to add sand volleyball programs, the NCAA is expected to add the sport to its national championship programming.
The Bruins will practice and play their home matches at the Annenberg Community Beach Facility in Santa Monica.
