Four-legged messengers of love

Volunteer dogs deliver Valentines
Reed Hutchinson/UCLA

Clutching her Valentine and stuffed animal, Esperanza, a patient at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, meets golden doodle Charley, one of the volunteer canines who visited the children.

Sick children at Mattel Children's Hospital got a heartwarming visit Friday from lovable canines, dressed up in their Valentine's Day finest. They were accompanied by their owners, all volunteers with UCLA's People-Animal Connection, an animal-assisted therapy program. The dogs dutifully delivered handmade Valentine cards to hospital rooms and playrooms, to the delight of young patients.

The Valentines were made and donated by Dollies Making a Difference, a group based in Pacific Palisades.
