UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement Cindy Fan led a campus delegation to Asia earlier this month for three forums that brought together alumni and supporters with local leaders.
The forums in Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai featured panel discussions with UCLA and local leaders on topics that included education, health care, technology, innovation, culture and the global economy. Receptions were also held in conjunction with these events so that UCLA alumni and their families could network and hear campus updates from the chancellor.
The UCLA Global Forum initiative is part of an ongoing effort to deepen ties with alumni, institutional partners and supporters living and working abroad.
In Seoul, UCLA robotics professor Dennis W. Hong joined Block, Fan and leading figures in Korean business, education and health care to discuss the country’s future. Approximately 120 people attended. The Dec. 8 event and the UCLA delegation’s visits to local institutions received press coverage, with Chancellor Block being interviewed by both Yonhap News and Yonhap News TV.
On Dec. 10 in Beijing, local leaders joined UCLA officials to discuss China’s economic growth and social development since the 1980s, the challenges of its current economic slowdown and its growing global role. Approximately 80 people attended the event, which was covered by local press as well.
On Dec. 12 in Shanghai, UCLA English professor King-Kok Cheung joined Block, Fan and local leaders to explore how intercultural thinking and activities in Shanghai are sparking new ideas and innovation. Approximately 65 people attended.
Another UCLA Global Forum is planned for Jan. 11 in New Delhi on the topic of sustainable energy for the future. For more information, go here.
