Alexander BystritskyAlexander Bystritsky, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences in the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, has been selected as one of 16 scientists by NARSAD (previously known as the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression), to receive its prestigious 2009 Distinguished Investigator Award. The one-year grant will provide Bystritsky with $100,000 to advance his research on the use of focused ultrasound pulsation to study brain circuits responsible for the biological mechanisms of mental disorders. The highly competitive grant program is designed to support innovative research on psychiatric brain disorders by investigators who have established themselves as leaders in their fields.
The Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) has been awarded a $48,000 grant by the Getty Foundation. The grant supports the arrangement and classification of four art collections in the CSRC Library and Archive as part of a special initiative, “Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945­–1980.” This project highlights the center’s dedication to preserving and promoting the arts.
vasilios2Vasilios Manousiouthakis, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been awarded $2.1 million in grant funding to build a state-of-the-art hydrogen fueling station on the UCLA campus. A $1.7 million grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and a $400,000 grant from the state's Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) will go toward the construction of one of the largest hydrogen fueling stations in California, with a capacity to produce 140 kilograms of hydrogen a day for use in hydrogen-powered vehicles. The station, which will be available for use by the public, will be run by UCLA Engineering's Hydrogen Engineering Research Consortium (HERC), which Manousiouthakis directs.
