Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood reopened before 2:30 p.m. Thursday following shutdowns for an immigrant rights protest in front of the Federal Building and a suspicious package reported near Wilshire and Westwood boulevards.
At least nine people were arrested during the morning protest. The protest involved some UCLA students supporting the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, commonly known as the DREAM Act. It's not clear whether any students were arrested.
The demonstration in the street in front of the Federal Building forced the closure of Wilshire Boulevard between Veteran Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard. Traffic backed up onto surrounding streets and onto the San Diego Freeway.
After the protest ended, another stretch of Wilshire Boulevard, extending east from Veteran, was closed due to a report of a suspicious package. Traffic diverted from Wilshire contributed to congestion in the area, and pedestrians heading to lunch in Westwood Village were directed by police to use alternate routes.
