Ever wonder what it’s like for musicians to perform in a place that's currently off-limits to the public and has an unfinished look about it?
Some of UCLA’s most talented performers recently found out when they made a campus construction site, with bare concrete walls and towering scaffolding, their impromptu stage. 
Dressed in their formal concert attire, the LaMi String Quarter, a graduate student group from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, took the stage. They were followed by the Music of India Ensemble, which played a piece called "Raga Desh." Rounding out the unofficial inaugural performances were members of the UCLA Bruin Marching Band, who showed their school spirit by performing the UCLA Fight Song.
Designed by Los Angeles–based Daly Genik Architects under the direction of principal Kevin Daly, the Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center is located adjacent to the Schoenberg Music Building and the Inverted Fountain. 
The designated space, the emerging Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center, was christened by members of Opera UCLA, who performed a selection from "Candide," during a closed-session film shoot that let student musicians, some of whom may not be around when the building is finally finished, try out its acoustics.

"We are so grateful for the generous gift by the Ostin Family Foundation to construct the Music Center," said Tim Rice, director of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. "When we saw the walls going up, we knew this was a unique opportunity to introduce some of our student ensembles to what will be a state-of-the-art recording studio. It will be a memory these students will cherish."
Scheduled to be completed in summer 2014, the new music center, which is funded in part by a generous donation from music industry executive and philanthropist Morris "Mo" Ostin, will also feature spaces for rehearsal and teaching, a café and social space, and an Internet-based music production center. It will provide faculty and students access to the latest advances in music technology, research and pedagogy.
