They took a break from answering email and ordering office supplies, greeting patients and running lab tests, sprucing up classrooms and landscaping lawns. Thousands of UCLA staff members, who perform countless jobs that keep the campus operating smoothly day after day, took a well-deserved break for food, fun and friends at today’s 11th annual All-Staff Picnic.
Welcoming them to the grassy picnic site on Dickson Court with stacks of hefty box lunches were Chancellor Gene Block — whose office co-hosts the popular event with UCLA Staff Assembly — along with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh, Vice Chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences and Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine Dr. John Mazziotta, Associate Vice Chancellor Campus Human Resources Lubbe Levin and other campus leaders.
“I want to thank all of you for a great year at UCLA,” said Block. “We’ve done a lot of great things on campus and in the community, and your efforts have helped make them happen. I especially want to thank the thousands who volunteered for Special Olympics, contributing to a fantastic experience for all.”
Staff Assembly President Mike Lee also thanked staff for all their hard work and urged them to have fun at the picnic.
And fun they certainly had: soaking up sunshine; visiting with coworkers over sandwiches, watermelon, kettle corn and ice cream; then showing off their Zumba moves and electric slide skills on the impromptu dance floor.
Staffers also busily pointed mobile phones and cameras at themselves to enter Staff Assembly’s “most creative selfies” contest. Check out photos on Staff Assembly’s Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram. You can post picnic photos of your own — use the the hashtag #UCLApicnic — to enter a contest in which the winners early prizes like Staff Assembly water bottles, T-shirts and bags.
