UCLA honors veterans at inaugural event in D.C.

In partnership with the Artists & Athletes Alliance, UCLA co-sponsored a reception in Washington, D.C., honoring the nonprofit ServiceNation and military veterans dedicated to a lifetime of service.
Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii — both of whom served in Iraq — delivered brief remarks to a crowd of members of the sports and entertainment communities who were in town for the inauguration of President Obama.
Other speakers at the Jan. 20 event included volunteers from Team Rubicon, a nonprofit organization that brings military veterans trained in first response to the front lines of national and international disasters, and members of ServiceNation, an alliance dedicated to making service by every citizen a national priority.
The event was part of UCLA's veterans initiative, a yearlong effort to help raise awareness about the many programs, services, research projects and resources at UCLA that benefit veterans. The initiative is also aimed at increasing understanding and appreciation for the challenges and opportunities presented by the increasing number of military veterans on college campuses and throughout the nation.
