UCLA volunteers headed for the Veterans Home of West Los Angeles on Sunday for a day of sanding, stripping and re-staining wood patio chairs, tables and benches so that veterans who are living at the assisted-living and skilled-nursing facility can continue to enjoy being outdoors. "It's so beautiful," one resident commented.
Four veterans met with volunteers to share stories about their military service and to thank the volunteers for their work. The Bruins also got a tour of the lobby photo gallery and learned about the facility's history. Many of the participants in this One Bus, One Cause project organized by the UCLA Volunteer Center were international students from China, Japan, Korea and Turkey, who are enrolled in the UCLA Extension language program.
The project was a repeat visit for the Bruins. Volunteers first visited the home Sept. 29 on Volunteer Day to meet residents, refurbish patio furniture, weed a nearby garden and catalogue materials in the home's library. The visit was so successful that residents there asked the Bruins to return.
