UCLA police arrested a suspect Friday morning in connection with multiple peeping and prowling incidents around UCLA.
The arrest was the result of the UCLA Police Department’s distribution of a July 21 crime alert identifying Christopher Mendicino, 47, as a suspect in several cases. A tipster who saw the bulletin notified police that he knew Mendicino, and that Mendicino had asked permission to store belongings in the acquaintance’s house and had asked him to buy a train ticket under a false name for travel out of town. UCLA officers arrested Mendicino at the acquaintance’s West Los Angeles home at approximately 6:15 a.m. today.
Mendicino was booked on charges of peeping into inhabited structures while loitering or prowling. He is being held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Inmate Reception Center on $30,000 bail.
“This is a fine example of solid police work by our officers,” said UCLA Police Chief James Herren. “The UCPD officers’ investigation and the broad circulation of the wanted bulletin led to a tip from a concerned member of the public, resulting in the arrest of a man suspected of targeting students.”
