UCLA will host a range of festivities in late October and early November to celebrate the reopening of the world-famous Pauley Pavilion.
"Welcome Back Pauley Week" will run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4 and will feature a variety of events for UCLA fans, alumni, students, and faculty and staff, as well as the generous donors who helped fund the revitalization of the storied arena, which has been closed for renovations since March 2011.
It's an eclectic mix of activities befitting a facility that has been home court to 39 NCAA championship teams in basketball, volleyball and gymnastics; welcomed the world during the 1984 Olympic Games; hosted renowned entertainers in concert; and staged commencement ceremonies and countless other events for UCLA students.
In addition to the events of "Welcome Back Pauley Week," the UCLA Athletic Department will host "Pauley Opening Weekend," a series of memorable ceremonies and events around the building's first two sporting events — the men's basketball game against Indiana State on Friday, Nov. 9, and the women's basketball contest against San Diego State the following day. Details of the ceremonies will be announced as that weekend approaches.
"Pauley Pavilion is known around the world as a symbol of UCLA's excellence and is close to the hearts of countless UCLA alumni, faculty and staff, and members of the general public who have enjoyed historic events and attended personally meaningful ceremonies in the arena," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said. "The renovation of Pauley Pavilion cements its legacy for future generations, and we have developed a series of events so its legions of fans can celebrate its reopening with the campus community."
Following is the lineup for "Welcome Back Pauley Week":
Sunday, Oct. 28
Pauley Pavilion Campaign of Champions Celebration
"New Pauley" hosts its first event, an invitation-only reception for approximately 800 campus and community leaders, UCLA sports legends, and donors who contributed to the Pauley Pavilion Campaign of Champions.
Tuesday, Oct. 30
Pauley Pavilion All-Campus Sneak Peek
11 a.m.–2 p.m.
This marks the first chance for UCLA faculty, staff and students to get a sneak peek of the new building. Members of the campus community will have the opportunity to walk through the new concourse spaces, view the new displays and amenities, and experience the fan features in the seating area.
Friday, Nov. 2
Pauley Opening Madness/Homecoming Festival
This special UCLA student–only event is being held in conjunction with Homecoming 2012. It is time to come home! The event, organized and coordinated by student leadership throughout campus, will include a Homecoming festival featuring student organizations and performances, giveaways, and prizes, with the spotlight on UCLA. The men's and women's basketball teams will also celebrate with their peers as the entire campus readies itself for the 2012–13 season.
Sunday, Nov. 4
Pauley Pavilion Alumni and Community Open House
10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Wooden Athletic Fund Appreciation Day
11:30 a.m.–2 p.m.
Bruin Varsity Club Reception
The free open-house event welcomes all UCLA alumni and Bruin fans for a tour of the new building, with an opportunity to purchase season tickets for the 2012–13 men's and women's basketball teams, the gymnastics team, and the men's volleyball team.
The Wooden Athletic Fund (WAF) Appreciation Day activities will be held on the intramural fields adjacent to Pauley. All WAF members are invited to attend the open house and will have the opportunity to stop by Appreciation Day and enjoy live entertainment, food and drinks while interacting with UCLA student–athletes, coaches and UCLA Athletics staff members.
The invitation-only reception for Bruin Varsity Club members (former UCLA letter-winners) will take place in the Pauley Pavilion Plaza and will give all former Bruin student–athletes the chance to take a VIP tour of "New Pauley."
"On behalf of UCLA Athletics, we are extremely excited about the opening of 'New Pauley Pavilion' and look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with the entire Bruin family," said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. "Pauley was the home of many great memories for UCLA fans, both young and old. The staff, coaches and student–athletes of the teams returning to Pauley are eager to take the floor and create new memories that will be fondly remembered for generations to come."
The renovated Pauley Pavilion will feature a new seating bowl that brings fans closer to the action while adding more than 1,000 seats, with individual padded seats replacing benches on the lower level. The arena will also feature a new center-hung high-definition video board, an LED ribbon board encircling the facility's interior, and a new lighting and sound system.
The north side of the pavilion will become the front of the building and will feature a grand lobby highlighting the theme "Champions Made Here." A newly created multi-purpose Pavilion Club on the north mezzanine will be used for game-day hospitality and other special campus events, and a new marketplace for concessions will grace the building's south side.
New facilities under Pauley's north-side lobby will include large locker rooms with player lounges for the men's and women's basketball teams, coaches' and referees' locker rooms, and a film room, sports-medicine room, weight room and equipment room.
The $136 million renovation project is funded through a variety of sources: private gifts; long-term debt backed by ticket sales, sponsorships and other UCLA Athletics revenues; and $15 million from an existing annual fee paid by UCLA students to help fund earthquake and life-safety upgrades to student facilities.
Pauley Pavilion is operated by the UCLA Department of Cultural and Recreational Affairs for the benefit of the entire campus. It has long been used for annual new student welcoming ceremonies, commencement ceremonies, intramural sports and a wide variety of other events, including concerts, political debates, summer sports camps and other popular public events.
