On Sept. 28, UCLA students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents and members of the public will participate in a day of service at sites throughout Los Angeles and around the world for the 11th annual UCLA Volunteer Day. This year, to celebrate UCLA’s 100th year, the event will be bigger than ever. From Los Angeles to Kyrgyzstan, there will be more than 100 service locations around the globe, including about 90 in greater Los Angeles.
Since UCLA Chancellor Gene Block established Volunteer Day in 2009, it has become one of the nation’s largest community participation events for new students and a gateway for students to volunteer year-round.
Organized by the UCLA Volunteer Center, the event organizes Bruins to provide thousands of hours of service work to communities in need. Activities include beautification projects at underserved schools and youth centers, socializing with residents at senior living facilities, clean-ups at parks and beaches, and helping at homeless shelters and food banks.
In the 10 previous UCLA Volunteer Days, more than 54,000 volunteers have taken part in more than 400 projects, contributing in excess of 330,000 volunteer hours — at an estimated value to the community of greater than $8.5 million.
At La Tijera K-8 Charter School Academy of Excellence, approximately 100 UCLA volunteers and members of the La Tijera community will beautify and paint murals. Available for interviews will be Karen McClain, the lead organizer for UCLA Volunteer Day, and D’Artagnan Scorza, director of the Social Justice Learning Institute and a UCLA Alumni Association board member.
