John Agnew, UCLA distinguished professor of geography, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oulu in Finland. The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland with around 16,000 students and 3,000 staff. The university is often ranked as one of the best in Finland.
Agnew has spent his scholarly career examining the politics of place. He teaches courses in political geography and globalization, as well as sections in the department of Italian. In March, he delivered the 122nd Faculty Research Lecture, one of the highest honors awarded by the UCLA Academic Senate.
At the doctoral degree ceremony at the University of Oulu, Agnew received academic symbols — a hat and a sword that can be used to defend truth.
