Martin Wachs is a distinguished professor emeritus of urban planning at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and an expert on transportation policy and planning, how transportation systems are financed, and on the environmental impacts of transportation systems.

Wachs is an authority on the relationships between transportation, land use and air quality; the transportation needs of the elderly; techniques for the evaluation of transportation systems; issues of equity in transportation planning; and the response of transportation systems to natural disasters.
