A hallmark of periodontal disease is a shift from Gram-positive species dominated healthy microbial community to Gram-negative bacteria dominated disease associated (dysbiotic) community. tsRNAs may represent a mechanism evolved in the host to suppress the growth of Gram-negative bacteria to maintain health.
