Mishuana Goeman and the Lummi totem
Todd Cheney/UCLA
Mishuana Goeman (Tonawanda Band of Seneca), chair of American Indian studies interdepartmental program and special advisor to chancellor on Native American and Indigenous affairs stands in front of the Lummi totem at UCLA during its national tour across the United States on its way to Washington, D.C. The 24-foot totem is carved from an ancient cedar tree and bearing images of Chinook salmon, a wolf, a bear, an eagle and seven tears — a reference to seven generations of trauma passed on from colonialism.
