Randall Akee and the Lummi totem
Todd Cheney/UCLA
Randall Akee (Native Hawaiian), chair of the American Indian Studies interdepartmental program, stands in front of the Lummi totem during its national tour across the United States on its way to Washington, D.C. The 24-foot totem is carved from an ancient cedar tree and bearing images of Chinook salmon, a wolf, a bear, an eagle and seven tears — a reference to seven generations of trauma passed on from colonialism.
