Shannon Speed and Lummi totem

Todd Cheney/UCLA

Shannon Speed, director of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center, stands in front of Lummi totem during its national tour across the United States on its way to Washington, D.C. The 24-foot totem is carved from an ancient cedar tree and bearing images of Chinook salmon, a wolf, a bear, an eagle and seven tears — a reference to seven generations of trauma passed on from colonialism.
