On Saturday, June 10, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television will host the 15th annual Design Showcase West, the only event of its kind on the West Coast that presents the work of students graduating from the nation’s top university design programs.

Studio executives, film and television producers, theater artistic directors and professional designers will gather at the Freud Playhouse, along with members of the public, to view exhibits that feature costume, scenic, sound, lighting and production design.

Students from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television will join others from 14 other universities and institutes across the country to present their work at the showcase, which was created by UCLA TFT.

Keynote speaker for the event will be three-time Emmy Award-winning production designer Deborah Riley. She joined the fourth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” in 2013 as the series’ production designer and will soon begin work on the eighth and final season of the epic medieval fantasy.

Riley, an Australian native, began her design study as an architecture student at the University of Queensland in 1991 and completed a stage design degree at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Kensington, New South Wales. Her film credits include “21 Grams” (2003), “Real Women Have Curves” (2002), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), “Anna and the King” (1999) and “The Matrix” (1999). Riley art-directed the closing ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and later worked on the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, as well as the opening of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China.

“We are so pleased to welcome Deborah Riley as our keynote speaker for Design Showcase West this year,” says Brian Kite, department of theater chair. “Ms. Riley’s design uses her unique vision for the big picture to give her films and TV shows their exceptional style. This same creativity can be seen in the student work showcased at DSW each year where the future leaders in design meet with film, television and theater industry professionals to advance their careers.”

The showcase is underwritten by presenting design patron Peter Kaufman; sponsored by United Scenic Artists Local 829, Art Directors Guild Local 800 and Costume Designers Guild Local 892; with support from corporate patrons Set Decorators Society of America and International Silks and Woolens.
