Carrie Hyde, associate professor of English at UCLA, has been awarded the 2018 Gustave O. Arlt Award in the humanities from the Council of Graduate Schools.

The organization is dedicated to the advancement of graduate education and research. The award is given annually to a young scholar who has written a book deemed to have made a significant contribution to the field of humanities.

Hyde was recognized for her book, “Civic Longing: The Speculative Origins of US Citizenship,” which examines the evolution and conceptualization of citizenship in the years between the American Revolution and the Civil War, specifically the central role that fiction and other imaginative traditions played in the period before the ratification of the 14th Amendment.

Hyde, who joined UCLA faculty in 2011, focuses her research on early United States literature, political philosophy and slavery and abolition literature.
