Join Marc Lynch, professor of political science at George Washington University, for a lecture on Syria and the new Arab wars on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in Bunche Hall.
How did the Arab uprisings lead to the horrifying wars which have destroyed Syria, Libya and Yemen? Why did the democratic uprising in Egypt end in a military coup? The new Arab wars show how the Middle East was consumed by proxy wars and state failures, and the challenges this poses to the United States.
These are some of the questions Lynch will answer. He is a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, director of the Project on Middle East Political Science and an associate editor of the Washington Post's Monkey Cage blog. In 2016 he was named an Andrew Carnegie Fellow.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Johanna Romero at 310-825-1181 or email her at romero@international.ucla.edu.
