Robert Alter, UC Berkeley Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature, will visit UCLA to discuss “The Challenge of Translating the Bible” on Thursday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m., UCLA School of Law, Room 1447. The free event, which includes refreshments, is free and open to the public.
Alter follows with a free seminar, "The Story of David and Bathsheba: II Samuel 11-12," on Saturday, Jan. 10, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the law school, Room 2442. Seminar participants will be expected to read these chapters from the Hebrew Bible, which constitute the story of David and Bathsheba, and be prepared to participate in a discussion. A pizza lunch will be delivered at the conclusion of the discussion. The seminar is free and open to all but will be limited to 20 participants, so advance enrollment is required. Enroll by email to Daniel Lowenstein.
On UC Berkeley's faculty since 1967, Alter is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the Council of Scholars of the Library of Congress, and the past president of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics. He has been a Guggenheim fellow twice, a senior fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem and an Old Dominion fellow at Princeton University.
