Philip Rundel, UCLA Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, has won the Hawai’i Book Publisher Association's 2015 Ka Palapala Po`okela Award of Excellence for Books on Natural Science for “Hawaiian Plant Life: Vegetation and Flora” (University of Hawai’i Press, 2014). He is also a member of UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and director of UCLA’s Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden.

"Hawaiian Plant Life," which Rundel co-authored with Robert Gustafson and Derral Herbst, also received an award of honorable mention in the category of books with outstanding photography.
