Two gifts totaling $450,000 will support research directed by Alex Hall, professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences and a member of the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.
A $250,000 gift over the next five years from Norman Powell, a UCLA alumnus, will fund the Center for Climate Science at UCLA, where Hall is the director. The funding will support research to better understand and respond to how climate change will affect water resources, and to build relationships with local water agencies to better provide water policymakers with relevant UCLA research.
A second gift of $100,000 comes from alumnae Suzanne Weiss Morgen, in memory of her father Henry “Hank” Weiss, who got his meteorology degree from UCLA. The gift is matched by the physical sciences division to create a $200,000 endowment to fund a public, game-show style biannual climate change education event for undergrads, grads and high school students.
