The national organization Research Integration Strategies and Evaluation (RISE) for Boys and Men of Color invited Tyrone Howard, professor and associate dean for equity and inclusion at UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information; AJ Scheitler, coordinator at UCLA Center for Health Policy Research; Yen Ling Shek, assistant director of research for the UCLA Office of Residential Life; and Minh Tran, director of curriculum and academic enrichment at the UCLA School of Dentistry, to attend the Summer Scholars Meeting at the University of Pennsylvania from Aug. 15 to 16, 2016.

RISE for Boys and Men of Color is a $10 million field advancement effort which aspires to better understand and improve the lives of boys and men of color in the U.S. The meeting assembled scholars like Howard, Scheitler, Shek and Tran, who do research on boys and men of color in the areas of education, health, human services and social policy, juvenile and criminal justice and workforce development. The goal of the meeting was to generate new research questions and strategies to evaluate programs and address issues facing boys and men of color in the five fields. They hope to translate scholarly findings for policymakers, community agents, journalists and practitioners. Boys and men of color, community members and experts also convene to help scholars identify urgent, culturally responsive research and evaluation needs.
