UCLA professor of education Tyrone Howard has been selected as one of 14 2017 AERA Fellows by the American Educational Research Association. The founding and current executive director of the Black Male Institute at UCLA and the associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, Howard joins 630 AERA Fellows nationwide. Howard will be inducted on April 28 during the AERA annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
“Becoming an AERA Fellow is a testament to the countless students, colleagues, mentors and research participants that I have been fortunate to work with over the years,” says Howard. “Being recognized by your peers is also an honor as well. I am humbled by this recognition.”
AERA is the largest national interdisciplinary research association devoted to the scientific study of education and learning. Founded in 1916, AERA advances knowledge about education, encourages scholarly inquiry related to education, and promotes the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.
Howard’s research and teaching interests include multicultural education, the sociopolitical context of schools and the trajectories of African American males. His most recent work is the Counter Narratives Project, a study focused on the personal and academic achievements of young black and Latino males in Los Angeles County.
Professor Howard was recognized in 2015 with two UCLA awards – the university-wide Distinguished Teaching Award and the Harvey L. Elby Art of Teaching Award. He was also honored by AERA with the Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo Memorial Award for Lifetime Scholarship in 2015.
