James Gelvin is a professor of history at UCLA and an expert on the social, cultural and political history of the modern Middle East. Gelvin, who is a member of the UCLA International Institute, has done research focused particularly on Greater Syria (the area of present-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories) and is author of “The Modern Middle East: A History” and “The Arab Uprisings: What Everyone Needs to Know.”
