Dr. Nanette Gartrell is a visiting distinguished scholar at the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute and a renowned expert on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families. Gartrell is a psychiatrist and the principal researcher of the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study, which since the 1980s, has been following and reporting on a cohort of planned lesbian families with children conceived through donor insemination. For more than a quarter century, this study has been providing information to specialists in healthcare, family services, adoption, foster care, sociology, feminist studies, education, ethics, same-sex marriage, civil union and public policy on matters pertaining to LGBT families.
