The broad excellence of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital is recognized in the annual Best Children’s Hospital rankings published today by U.S. News & World Report.
Two pediatric specialties — nephrology and orthopaedics — placed in the top 20 nationally, and six others earned spots in the top 50: neurology/neurosurgery, gastroenterology, cancer, urology, cardiology and neonatology.
“These rankings reflect both the outstanding care that UCLA provides to children with a wide range of conditions and UCLA’s national standing in pediatric care,” said Dr. Sherin Devaskar, physician-in-chief of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and the Mattel Executive Endowed Chair of the department of pediatrics.
Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of UCLA Hospital System, said: “This recognition of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital is a testament to the commitment and teamwork of our skilled physicians, nurses, therapists and other health care professionals who put patients first and collaborate to provide exceptional care.”
The assessment of 189 hospitals relied on clinical data and a survey of pediatric specialists to identify the nation’s top programs in various specialties. The rankings methodology factored in patient outcomes, clinical resources and compliance with best practices.
Located in Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital has had numerous pediatric specialties ranked each year since the rankings were introduced in 2007. The hospital and its family support programs are designed to treat the most critically ill children with sophisticated, compassionate care that is both healing and welcoming.
“The U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals highlight pediatric centers that deliver state-of-the-art medical care to children with complex conditions,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Children with life-threatening or rare conditions need the level of quality care that these hospitals deliver day after day.”
UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach are forming a strategic affiliation that brings together their academic, clinical and research expertise, and resources to enhance children’s health care services in Southern California.
