UCLA has been ranked 12th among the top 400 universities in the world in the respected Times Higher Education annual survey, moving up one spot from last year. The campus also was rated the world's No. 2 public university.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released Oct. 2, is a comprehensive assessment of the world's best institutions of higher learning. The rankings rely on performance indicators such as the quality of teaching and research and the international mix of staff and students.
UCLA was among eight UC campuses that performed well in the rankings. The others were Berkeley (No. 8), Santa Barbara (33), San Diego (40), Davis (52), Irvine (93), Santa Cruz (136) and Riverside (148).
Times Higher Education, a weekly magazine based in London, also produces the annual World Reputation Rankings, which orders schools according to their international prestige. These rankings are based on a survey of more than 16,000 academics in 144 countries. In the most recent rankings, released in March, UCLA was No. 8.
The campus consistently rates among the top universities in the world. This September, UCLA placed No. 23 in U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of the nation's top colleges and universities, up one position from 2012. And in August, the campus was ranked second among public universities in the U.S. in Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities. That survey, which evaluated more than 1,000 institutions, also placed UCLA 12th among all universities in the world — both public and private — for the third year in a row.
