U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital for excellence across all pediatric specialties in its 2019-20 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
In three pediatric specialties — gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; nephrology; and orthopaedics — UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital placed among the top 20 children’s hospitals nationally. In the seven other specialties assessed in the annual rankings — cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; neonatology; neurology and neurosurgery; pulmonology and lung surgery; and urology — the hospital ranked among the top 50.
“This recognition reflects the teamwork of our dedicated physicians, nurses, therapists and many other health care professionals and volunteers who collaborate every day to change the lives of children and their families,” said Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of UCLA Hospital System, including UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. “These rankings are a testament to their commitment to extraordinary patient care in a compassionate environment.”
The annual U.S. News Best Children’s Hospital assessment is based on clinical data and on a survey of pediatric specialists. The methodology for the rankings factors in patient outcomes, available clinical resources and compliance with best practices.
“We’re honored to be recognized for our team-based approach to providing comprehensive, complex and family-centered care,” said Dr. Sherin Devaskar, physician-in-chief of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, who holds the Mattel Executive Endowed Chair in the department of pediatrics. “Our teams are proud to collaborate in order to deliver state-of-the-art therapies, which we’re privileged to provide to children and their families.”
Since the U.S. News rankings began in 2007, the facility’s pediatric specialty departments have been consistently ranked among the nation’s best. The hospital, located within Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and its support programs aim to provide sophisticated, compassionate care to critically ill children.
“The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings were designed to help provide families seeking the best medical care for their sick child with access to the most comprehensive data available,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “The rankings, coupled with guidance from pediatricians, help families make better-informed decisions about where to find high-quality, compassionate care for their children when they need it most.”
The U.S. News assessment adds to the national recognition UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital has received for excellence. The hospital was named one of the nation’s most innovative in Parents magazine’s most recent assessment of children’s hospitals.
In addition to UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, UCLA Health provides general and specialty pediatric services at more than 40 community clinics throughout Southern California.
