Zocalo and UCLA will host a discussion about the policies, services and street strategies that will help homeless people stay off the streets, 7:30 -9:30 p.m., Monday, June 29, at the Plaza on Olvera Street.
Participating on the panel will be UCLA psychiatrist Kenneth Wells, Los Angeles County Housing for Health director Marc Trotz, Ocean Park Community Center executive director John Maceri and Christine Margiotta, UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs alumna and vice president of community impact at United Way of Greater Los Angeles. The event will be moderated by Steve Lopez, columnist of the Los Angeles Times.
Although homelessness is dropping across the country, it remains relatively steady in Southern California, particularly in Los Angeles County with over 35,000 homeless people. Los Angeles has tried to reduce its number of homeless by using a wide-array of strategies, such as police shutdowns, containment policies, more housing, and providing medical and sanitation services.
